A member of the House of Representatives, from Kaduna State, Hon. Godfrey Ali Gaya, (PDP, Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency) on Wednesday distributed over N50 million Poverty Alleviation materials to 357 members of his constituency.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gaya, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, said the initiative was part of measures to improve the living standard of his people and steps to make them self-independent.
“It is my hope that the gesture would go a long way to cushion hardship faced by our people and make them self reliant,” he said.
The lawmaker urged the beneficiaries to make maximum use of the items to achieve the purpose for which they were intended.
Earlier, Mr Nuhu Hwuah, who was Chairman at the occasion thanked the legislator for the gesture and advised the beneficiaries to make maximum use of the items. Hwuah, who was also a former Minister of State, Mines and Power, described the gesture as “outstanding” and urged other representatives to emulate the exemplary leadership exhibited by Gaya.
Mrs Grace Daniya, a beneficiary commended the initiative and promised to make judicious use of the sewing machine she received.
Also, Mr Paul Bago who received a tricycle said the gesture has afforded him the means to fend for his family.
The poverty alleviation materials distributed at the event included cars, tricycles, motorbikes, sewing machines, knap sack sprayers and block-making machines.
Gayo, who graduated with a B.Sc in Geology from the University of Ibadan in 1985 and holds an M.Sc (Hdrology) from the University of Lagos, was until 2006 a Special Adviser to the Kaduna State Governor. He was also Manager (Geological Services), NEPA Headquarters (1999 – 2000) and Geologist, Kaduna State Water Board (1986 – 1990).
