As part of final preparations for the 2015 general elections, two of the three major political parties in Ogun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP), have commenced membership registration. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state is yet to give indication about a fresh registration of its members.
Membership registration in a political party is a prelude to its congress where fresh officers will be elected to run the affairs of the organisation. The exercise is also essential for internal democracy as registered members will be expected to pick flag-bearers of the party towards a general election.
LP’s began on Monday, while that of the APC kicked off on Wednesday with the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and his wife, Olufunso, registering at Ward 4, Ajura in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, while a national leader of APC, Chief Olusegun Osoba registered at Ago-Oba Ward, unit 288, in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.
Amosun, in a chat with journalists during the registration exercise, disassociated the APC from political violence, as he explained that members who disagreed with one another have since closed ranks with a firm resolve that the party would win all elective posts in Ogun State come the 2015 general elections.
LP Chairman, Ijebu East Local Government, Comrade Ishola Ganiyu, told our correspondent that the registration has been hitch-free since it began on Monday. “We started on Monday and likely to end it on Friday or Saturday. So far, we don’t have any problem, and we are sure there’ll not be any problem.
“What we are doing is a continuous exercise based on the directive of our national secretariat. We did a similar exercise in November last year, and we first gave membership cards to those whose names are already on the register. There is no problem at all, because all those who came were registered.”
