The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro (FPI), Ogun State, Dr. Olusegun Aluko, on Monday disclosed that, the institution in partnership with Dangote Cement group and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) will start offering courses in Cement Technology for students.
The institution, according to the Rector is the first ever Polytechnic in Nigeria to offer the courses in Cement technology, adding that the institution was committed to supporting the Federal government agenda to diversify the country’s economy into agriculture and other sectors to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.
Aluko who spoke during a press conference to herald the institution’s 40th Founder’s Day anniversary and 19th convocation ceremony, revealed that Alhaji Aliko Dangote and his cement company had ordered N220million worth of equipment to allow for the smooth takeoff of the course.
The Rector noted that the polytechnic was ready to work assiduously to ensure that the age-long narrative of economic meltdown becomes a history by producing self-reliance graduates that would contribute to the economic development of the country by creating jobs.
His words, “We are working to make sure that we impact on our immediate environment. We have created an agricultural hub with our agricultural village.
“We are the only polytechnic in Nigeria that will be offering courses in Cement Technology. We have a collaboration with the manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) and a cement group, headed by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, they have sponsored the curriculum for the Cement Technology course.”
“The curriculum had been accepted and to the glory of God, Dangote and his cement group have approved the equipment worth N220million for the Polytechnic. We are waiting for the equipment before we start the course, the Rector added.
Speaking on the Convocation, Aluko disclosed that the institution would be graduating 4,000 students in both National (ND) and High National Diploma (HND) programmes.
He also disclosed that the Polytechnic would be conferring awards on the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle and Chief S.A.J Ibikunle, a renowned Dentist for their services to humanity, Nigeria and particularly, the Polytechnic.
