There was palpable tension in Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu North Local government area of Ogun State on Saturday, when an angry mob set ablaze a Dangote cement truck for allegedly killing a motorcyclist and injuring three others.
The incident occurred on the old Ibadan roundabout road, Ago-Iwoye when the truck which on a high speed lost control and ran over a moving motorcycle, killing the rider and injuring three others.
The Spokesman of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi who confirmed the accident to journalists, explained that, the truck driver who was coming from Ago-Iwoye inbound Ijebu-Ode lost control of the truck while approaching Ibadan roundabout and rammed into the motorcycle, killing the rider.
Angered by the incident, an irate mob blocked the road and set the truck ablaze while the driver was reportedly beaten to stupor.
The driver was later rescued from the angry mob by men of TRACE, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police.
According to Akinbiyi, “the driver, due to over-speeding could not control the vehicle as it approached Ibadan roundabout and rammed over a Bajaj motorcycle rider who was trying to negotiate the roundabout at that time.
“The driver of the Dangote truck was later apprehended after making attempts to run away and was beaten to stupor by the angry mob which also set the truck on fire.
“But for the intervention of TRACE, Police, NSCDC and the FRSC, the driver would have been killed and the truck would have been completely burnt down.
“The driver has been arrested and taken to Igbeba Motor Traffic Division, Ijebu-Ode, as well as the motor boy.
“The body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary of Femtop Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, GRA.”
Akinbiyi urged drivers of articulated vehicles to be more responsible when driving.
He also urged them to ensure that their vehicles are always in good condition and avoid speeding, especially when approaching a bend, corner or roundabout.
