Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has described the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, as a man of many parts whose life and legacy would transcend many generations.
The governor said this in Ijebu-Ode on Friday during the 3rd Annual Professorial Chair Lecture organised by Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in commemoration of the 85th birthday celebration of the Awujale.
Amosun, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, further eulogised the monarch as a foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland with a legendary status amongst his subjects.
“We are grateful to the Almighty God for sparing the life of Kabiyesi for him to continue to contribute his quota and make available his wealth of experience and resources towards the process of nation building.
“Kabiyesi long may you reign in good health to contribute to the socio-economic and political development of not only Ogun State but also the entire country,” Amosun said.
Responding, Adetona thanked God for keeping him alive till date and also appreciated the Ogun State government and the people of Ijebuland for their kindness and support.
“God Almighty has been wonderful to me in all aspects of life, I can only give glory to Him for making me to see today. I want to specifically thank the governor, Amosun, for always being there for me at every beckon.
“Also, I would be nothing without my people who have supported me all these years. I’m deeply grateful and pray that God Almighty shall reward you all,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, Mr Olatunji Ayanlaja, Chairman, Board of Trustees for the 3rd Annual Professorial Chair, said Adetona was regarded as a respectful monarch across the nation.
He said the monarch achieved the feat with his tremendous contribution to the socio-economic development of Ogun, especially praising him for his integrity and selflessness.
Important dignitaries at the event include the Ogun governor-elect, Mr Dapo Abiodun, former governors of the state, Chief Segun Osoba and Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
Others were The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Ogun-East senator-elect Lekan Mustapha, business mogul and CEO Rite Foods,Mr Saleem Adegunwa.
