Three persons on Monday died while 14 others sustained injuries in an accident that occurred at Saapade area on the Lagos – Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.
The accident involved a Mazda bus with registration number: AKD 53 XN which was travelling from Ibadan to Lagos and a Ford bus, marked RGB 490 XA travelling from Lagos to Ikire.
The Spokesman of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident to journalists on Monday, attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed and reckless driving.
Akinbiyi added that the accident occurred at diversion area on the expressway and it was a head on collision between the two vehicles.
According to him, 17 people were involved in the accident, all male adults, adding that 14 people got injured while three persons died.
Akinbiyi said, “The eyewitness account posited that the driver of the Ford bus coming from Lagos to Ikire was among the three dead victim’s while the other two were among the passengers in the Mazda bus.”
He explained further that, the injured victims were rescued to Victory Hospital, Ogere, State Hospital, Isara and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu while the corpses deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
Akinbiyi warned motorists to avoid excessive speed and reckless driving at diversion and construction areas because of its attendant consequences, rather they should uphold the 50km/h speed limit.
