Hoodlums, suspected to be political thugs, on Thursday ransacked an office of Senator Akin Odunsi (APC, Ogun West Senatorial District) in Ota, Ogun State. Although no life was lost in the attack, the thugs broke all windows and vandalised office  equipment after inflicting injuries on a staff Miss Kemi Afolabi.

Ogun State Police Command spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the violence explaining that the swift intervention of policemen, led by Divisonal Police Officer in the area, Gabriel Idibie, saved the situation from getting out of hand. Adejobi, also confirmed that the state commissioner of Police, Mr.Ikemefuna Okoye, paid an on the spot assessment to the scene and directed a full scale investigation into the matter.

He said, “The CP, Ikemefuna Okoye, has visited the scene in company of the DCP Operations, Mohammed Abdulkadri, Area Commander Otta, Titi Kayode, and DPO Otta, Gabriel Idibie, for on-the-spot assessment and has ordered a full scale investigation into the matter.” The PPRO expressed dismay at the “assault and malicious damage” and warned residents against taking laws into their hands.

Odunsi, in a statement signed by an aide, Mr. Kunle Somorin, said the attack was politically motivated, as he commended the prompt intervention of the police.

He said, “This morning, our Constituency office at Otta was attacked my some hoodlums. They disrupted office activities and injured the Secretary, Ms. Kemi Afolabi. The Administrative Officer, Mr Olasunkanmi Olayode managed to escape. As adherents of the rule of law, we have since lodged a formal complaint at the Otta Divisional Police Station. We thank the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, Mr. Ikemefuna for coming to the scene with the Divisional Police Officer and the Area Commander when he was informed.

“We appreciate the calls of solidarity from the Director of State Security. We plead with them to dig deep and unearth those agents of destruction that visited our office. Ms Afolabi is still receiving treatment in a private hospital in Otta.

“We are inclined to believe that the attack is politically motivated. The spate of violence visited on the National Assembly members of the All Progressives Congress across the State in recent time attests to the desperation of some elements to intimidate people into undue acquiescence. Only yesterday, a band of brigands went to disrupt the Otta Ward 1 meeting of the Party. They were kept in check by members. It is our desire that common sense will prevail and those inordinately ambitious to lead the people will recant in no distance future.

“We deplore this barbaric descent to violence for political reasons. Ours is a progressive party and the ideology eschews bitterness, violence and criminality. The liberal political space is wide enough to accommodate ideas and free speech to market candidates. We enjoin those whose stock in trade is do-or-die to perish the thought of cowing people. In this age of reason, it will not work.

“We hereby implore members of the APC, the good people of Otta and Ogun West to go about their normal duties and maintain calm. We remain resolute that the will of the people shall prevail.  Our people must resist attempt to provoke them into taking laws into their hands. We stand by our resolve to make progress in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect for the feelings of our compatriots. The Police and security people have been alerted about this strange development in our peace-loving and hospitable community.”
